Google Nest makes security cameras that integrate with the Google Home app, including Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam Battery, and Nest Doorbell (both wired and battery). All Nest cameras require a Nest Aware subscription ($8 to $15 per month) for any cloud storage longer than 3 hours.
Nest Camera Lineup in 2026
- Nest Cam (Indoor, wired). 1080p HDR, HDR handling, 6x digital zoom, $100
- Nest Cam (Battery). Wire-free Nest Cam outdoor/indoor, 6-month battery
- Nest Cam with Floodlight. Outdoor Nest Cam + 2400-lumen floodlight
- Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). 3:4 aspect ratio, head-to-toe view
- Nest Doorbell (battery). Wire-free Nest Doorbell, easy renter install
Nest Aware Subscription
Without Nest Aware, every Nest camera gives you three hours of event-based video history and smart alerts. Live view and a rolling window of clips. Nest Aware (~$8/month or $80/year) expands that to 30 days of event video history, adds AI face recognition (for known faces you tag), and unlocks package detection. Nest Aware Plus ($15/month or $150/year) adds 60 days of event history and 10 days of 24/7 continuous recording for wired Nest Cam models.
The 24/7 recording is Nest Aware Plus’s killer feature. Ring and Arlo both cap recording at event clips regardless of subscription tier. For a wired Nest Cam pointed at a driveway, the Nest Aware Plus 10-day continuous roll pulls the whole day in one timeline. Scroll back to any moment, not just motion events. That’s closer to what a traditional DVR delivers, packaged in the Google Home app.
Nest vs Ring vs Arlo: Ecosystem Matters
Nest wins decisively if you use Google Home. Live view on Nest Hub displays, Chromecast streaming to any TV, Google Assistant voice commands, Home Routines triggered by Nest Cam person detection. It’s all tight. Ring wins if you use Alexa. Arlo wins on raw video quality (Ultra 2 beats the Nest Cam on 4K detail). Nest’s image processing (HDR, tone mapping) is often more pleasant to look at than Arlo’s despite the resolution gap.
For Nest vs Ring on doorbell cameras specifically, Nest Doorbell 2nd gen captures a 3:4 aspect ratio. You see head-to-toe without wide-angle distortion. Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 captures the same with 1:1 aspect. Both are excellent. Nest edges Ring on voice quality during two-way talk. Ring edges Nest on ecosystem breadth (Ring Alarm, Neighbors app).
Installing and Configuring Nest Cameras
Nest camera setup is a 5-minute affair in the Google Home app. Scan the QR code on the Nest Cam, connect to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, mount with the magnetic base (wire-free) or the screw-in plate (wired). For Nest Doorbell wiring, use standard 16-24 VAC low-voltage chime wiring. Same as Ring and Eufy doorbells. The Nest Cam battery pairs via Bluetooth first, then upgrades to Wi-Fi for streaming.
Smart home camera integration: Nest works natively with Google Home, Chromecast, Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, and Google Assistant. Matter support is rolling out slowly. Not every Nest Cam is Matter-compatible yet (check the model sheet on store.google.com). Apple HomeKit is not supported on current-gen Nest Cam hardware. For that cross-ecosystem flexibility, pick Arlo over Nest.
Official Nest support: Google Nest Help. For smart home camera and IP camera standards: ONVIF, SIA, NIST.
Nest Cam Lineup: Indoor and Outdoor, Google Account Integration, and 2K
Google Nest cameras cover indoor and outdoor scenarios through the Nest app (now merged into the Google Home app). Google Nest Cam Indoor is the 1080p wired-plug indoor model; Google Nest Cam Outdoor (battery or wired variants) covers exterior. A new Google Nest launch in late 2025 bumped the flagship to 2K resolution with HDR processing. Every Nest Cam pairs to your Google account and integrates with Google Home speakers and displays for voice control, notification routing, and camera-feed-on-display flows. A Gemini-powered AI layer handles person/familiar-face detection in the Nest app.
Subscription is through Google Home Premium (the former Nest Aware plan, now called Google Home Premium-Abo in German regions). Google Home Premium covers event history, familiar face alerts, and extended clip retention across all Google Nest cameras on one account. Without a subscription, Nest cameras still show live view and send motion notifications, but recorded clip history is limited to 3 hours. Google Store sells the Nest lineup direct; third-party retailers (Best Buy, Amazon) carry the same SKUs at matching pricing. A security system with Nest cameras plus a Nest Hub display shows every camera feed on one kitchen counter screen. For households already in Google’s ecosystem, Nest is the cleanest integration path; for households avoiding subscription services, Nest’s value drops once Google Home Premium is factored in. The Nest Doorbell (battery or wired) covers the front-door camera role on the same account.
